About Us
Leon Pamphile is a Haitian-born educator, minister, author, and humanitarian whose life has been defined by one unshakable mission: to uplift the people of Haiti through education, faith, and service. As the founder of the Functional Literacy Ministry of Haiti and a bishop overseeing more than 120 churches across the country, he has dedicated more than four decades to building a brighter future for generations of Haitians—one classroom, one family, one soul at a time.
A Journey of Faith, Education, and Impact
Born in Haiti and deeply shaped by its vibrant culture and challenges, Leon Pamphile felt a calling early in life to serve others. After immigrating to the United States, he pursued higher education while keeping his heart firmly rooted in the needs of his homeland. His journey—both spiritual and academic—has been a bridge between two worlds, giving him a unique platform to advocate for literacy, leadership, and lasting change in Haiti.
Our mission is not just to teach people how to read—but how to lead. Literacy is the foundation. From there, we build communities of faith, strength, and opportunity.

Changing Lives Through Literacy
In 1983, Leon Pamphile established the Functional Literacy Ministry of Haiti (FLM Haiti) with a simple but powerful belief: that education is the key to transforming lives and communities. What began as a grassroots initiative has grown into a dynamic nonprofit organization providing literacy education, healthcare services, vocational training, and leadership development throughout Haiti.
Under his leadership, FLM Haiti has:
Taught thousands of adults and children to read and write
Trained teachers and community leaders
Provided access to medical care and health education
Responded to crises with compassion and practical support
Through it all, Leon has remained committed to the principle that well-being is found through well-doing—the idea that service to others enriches us all.
Faith in Action
Leon Pamphile is also a bishop in the Church of God in Christ, where he provides spiritual guidance to more than 120 congregations across Haiti. His ministry blends teaching and preaching with hands-on community development. Whether he’s in a pulpit or a remote village, Leon’s message is rooted in hope, healing, and the power of faith in action.
Writing with Purpose
In addition to his ministry and humanitarian work, Leon is a prolific author and respected scholar. He has published 13 books, many of which explore the intersections of Haitian history, U.S.–Haitian relations, spirituality, and social justice. His writings have been used in university classrooms and cited in academic circles, reflecting both scholarly rigor and deep personal insight.
One of his most notable contributions is the “Enjoying Well-Being Through Well-Doing” series, which encapsulates his life philosophy and encourages readers to find fulfillment through service.
